Week 01
Prompt: Ace x Reader Shenanigans

A fireball passes by your face, making you reel back in shock.

Turning around, you narrow your eyes at the culprit who grins down at you.

"You could've hit me," you say, voice blunt.

"Don't be silly, [Y/N]," Ace coos, jumping from the step. Landing in front of you, he squats so that he matches your eye level. "I wouldn't hurt you."

His tone suggests playfulness and insincerity, but with Ace, you knew he had a way of masking his true feelings under mockery and amusement.

"What's up?" you ask, returning your attention to the job marked out for you. As you dip the sponge in the wooden bucket, he starts to talk.

"I was bored, and wanted to see what you were doing." He tilts his head to the side, watching you wring the sponge out and scrub the deck. "Did they put you on cleaning duty?" he questions, voice rumbling with laughter.

"No," you answer, "I asked for it."

"Why would you do that?" he gasps. The thought of willingly cleaning was unfathomable to him.

You shrug, feeling scrutinised. "It distracts me from..." You pause, trying to find the right word. As you rack your brain, nothing comes to mind. Sighing, you settle for a vague one, "stuff," you finish.

Ace looks at you, eyes downcast. "[Y/N]... I'm --"

"Don't," you interrupt, "it's not your fault. Don't apologize."

He stays silent, pondering on something. "Well, it kinda --"

"Don't," you snap, feeling something build up in your throat. You glance up at him, only to find him staring with wide eyes.

"Don't cry," he soothes, arm reaching out to you.

Screwing your eyes shut, you shake your head. Hurriedly, you wipe your tears with your sleeve. "I'm not crying," you say. But it comes out like a weak call.

"I know I'm not around often," Ace begins.

Your eyes travel up to see that he had brought his hand back to his side.

"But I'm here now," he continues.

"Ace, it's okay."

He stands up, stretching for a bit.

"What are you --?"

Your sentence is cut off as he kicks the bucket in front you, soaking your clothes with sudsy water.

You glare at him in shock, only to see him grinning.

"Oops," he says quickly, before turning on his heel and running off.

Scrambling to your feet, you give chase, yelling threats after him.

"I'll push you into the ocean!"

A laugh resounds on the other side of Moby Dick. "Only if you catch me," he sings.

Don't worry, I'll get you.

Feet thudding on the wooden floors, you follow his voice. You make your way up some steps and through a corridor.

You see Ace turn the corner, and smirk.

Slowing down, you walk, trying to lighten your footsteps.

A door opens in front of you, and Marco comes out, surveying the area behind you. "Yoi. I thought you were supposed to clean the ship, [Y/N]."

Glancing back, you see the corridor splattered with wet footprints that matches your own.

"I have a perfectly good explanation for this," you say, slightly panting.

"Hmm?" he hums, waiting.

"It's Ace's fault."

Marco pauses for two seconds before questioning you again. "Isn't he --?"

"He came back," you interrupt.

"Just clean up when your done," he murmurs.

"Sure," you smile, running off.

Turning the corner, you pound up the stairs and fling open the door. Ace stands there, looking out and admiring the view.

Upon hearing your entrance, he glances back. "Took you long enough," he smirks.

"Whatever," you pant, walking towards him.

"Tired already?"

"Shut it."

He grins before standing on the railing.

"If you jump, I'm gonna kill you."

"That's hardly a threat, [Y/N]," he comments. Waving, he leans back, allowing gravity to take over.

Growling, you turn back, running down the steps and corridor, muttering under your breath. "Stupid pyromaniac."

Once outside, you quickly look around, searching for the familiar hat.

Hearing a sound above, you look up to see Ace standing on the roof, pushing something down.

Jumping out the way, you cringe as the object crashes on the floor, the wood splintering.

Fruits spill out of the broken barrel, rolling about here and there.

"Get your ass down here and clean this up!" you yell, climbing the distance to the roof.

He lets out a chuckle and stands there. "Make me."

Sighing, you run towards him, only to trip on something. As you fall, you let out a squeal that sends Ace into a laughing fit.

It was only then that you realised he had laid out various fruits across the roof.

A shadow falls over you, and you glance up, seeing his grinning face. "You okay?"

"I'm gonna get you!" Swiping your hands, you try to grab anything of his, but he leans back.

Rolling over, you get to your feet.

Ace proceeds to jump off, holding onto his hat.

You follow suit, chasing him through the ship.

* * *

Breathing heavily, you stand in front of Ace, hands on your hips.

He was now cornered, and you were finally going to get him back.

"You... Little... Shit," you manage to say.

He laughs, loving how you cursed him. "Aww c'mon. It was only a joke." He grins. "Lighten up."

"I'll light you up," you growl, ignoring how his grin made your heart race.

His face falls, the smile wiped off his face. He closes his eyes, and seems to retreat within himself.

"Ace?" you whisper. You start to wonder if you had said anything wrong. Or perhaps he had fallen asleep.

"Shh," he hushes you, but continues to focus on something else.

Slightly worried, you step towards him. You feel the need to repeat his name, but don't.

Opening his eyes slowly, he focuses on you. His hand reaches out and he holds your own.

You gasp at the touch, and your attention diverts itself from your intertwined fingers, to his face.

He smiles down at you, then pulls you into a hug.

Warmth suddenly fills your body, and you almost feel another heart beating.

"Ace..." You breathe. "You..."

"I had a lot of time to learn," he whispers. "Being dead isn't fun, you know."

Bringing your arms up, you wrap them around his neck, burying your face into his shoulder.

"How long can you stay like this?"

"I don't know," he answers. "It comes and goes sometimes. It depends on how hard I concentrate. It's easier with objects because I only have to push them with my hands or something."

You tighten your arms around him, savoring his touch. This wasn't like the other times where one of you would accidentally brush against the other, and Ace would flicker.

This was like he was almost alive again.

"[Y/N]... I've missed you."

He pulls back, arms still around your waist. Leaning down, his lips press against yours.

You kiss him back, trying to remember the way he felt so you could ingrain it into your memory.

When you stop for breath, you look up into his face, seeing that it was pale. He was breathing heavily, face gaunt and tired.

"Are you going to leave?" you whisper.

He shakes his head, closing his eyes again. Resting his forehead on yours, he mutters under his breath.

"Ace, it's okay," you soothe. You wanted him to stay longer, but the process of solidifying himself took it's toll on him. He would become weak and more ghost-like than before. It would take him two weeks to cross over back to the living, instead of three days.

You had always thought that your devil fruit was useless, but now because of it, you could see him every time he came over.

He starts to flicker, and your arms falls through him.

An icy chill passes through your body, and you step back, still unused to how cold his temperature dropped to.

"I'm sorry," he murmurs.

"Ace, it's okay. It's not your fault."

"[Y/N], I love you."

You smile, feeling something wet track down your cheeks. "I love you too, Ace."

He returns your smile, and closes his eyes, as if wanting to stay longer.

"Ace?"

"[Y/N]." He voice is strained and weak, as if staying too long in the living world is draining him. "Can you promise me something?"

You nod, watching as his starts to become transparent.

"If you see Luffy, tell him I'm doing fine."

"Promise," you say.

A smile pulls on his face, and he reaches out to you.

Something colds brushes the corner of your eye, and he says, "Don't cry, okay? I'll come back."
Hope this was good enough for you ~

This is for the competition thing that PirateQueenD is doing. I decided to join in and do this.
